To Urban Soule, art is “ something that you create from within yourself or a creation from something that inspired you.”
When did you start creating art?
I started creating art probably like every one else when I was a child, it came naturally for me. I used to draw a lot of dinosaurs, flowers and other animals, I couldn’t ever seem to get human faces to come out looking right though. At grade school, all the kids would ask me to draw them specific pictures and I would sell them for a dollar a piece. When I was about 7, I was at a street fair and saw a blind man hand tearing paper silhouettes and I thought it would be neat to try, except I started with an x-acto and started making stencils and haven’t stopped.
Why do you create art?
I feel like I always have to be doing something with my hands, each picture, pattern and color convey different feelings and emotions depending on the person,so in a way, each painting tells a different story to each individual. Plus, I like all the different smells of the art supplies and at the end of the day I like to have my hands covered in paint, otherwise I feel I haven’t accomplished anything!
What or who inspires you?
One of my childhood favorites was Andy Warhol I liked his bold bright colors and imagery and Salvador Dali is a favorite because of his strange way of perceiving the world. I find inspiration in just about everything, nature, people, others art, emotions, just about everything I see I enjoy and try to include it in my work.
Does creating allow an outlet for you?
Most definitely. Depending on what I’m actually painting and the mood of the day sets off what ends up on the canvas, then again, there are days where I have no idea where to go with the paint and it’s ends up purely experimental.
Why did you start?
My teachers I had growing up always told me that I couldn’t make a career being a professional artist and that I would never make any money selling my art. So in away its like I’m rebelling against all my teachers, it made me work harder to prove them wrong, I taught myself the business and marketing side of selling art, which included building my own website starting my own business and doing all the work myself, taxes included! Of course I enjoy doing it all at the same time even though it is a lot of work, my average work day is about 16 hrs but in the end I like to see what my imagination produces! Some people have different views on art. For example Andy Warhol and Graffiti artists are sometimes considered not art.
What do you think is art or what isn’t art, if any?
I think art is something that you create from your imagination or some where within yourself. I see art in just about everything I look at..ranging from buildings to trees, it all was created from something, either by a human, animal or a seed of sorts…the thing I don’t like is the main stream galleries having a say in what is art and what isn’t or trying to take a huge cut from the artist, I try not to judge art, you know what you like and don’t like, it’s really up to the individual.
